An intimate relationship exists between land and water resources. Wise land use must be practiced to protect this area's groundwater, lakes, streams and wetlands. Muskego Lakes Conservancy is a land trust with the vision to do this. Formed by the Little Muskego Lake Association as a way to move quickly to protect sensitive land from development that could hard water quality, Muskego Lakes Conservancy has 60 acres currently under permanent protection. In a community where the beauty of nature and the demands of progress must coexist, these and future acres are proof of what is possible.
Muskego Lakes Conservancy is part of a nationwide movement of locally organized conservation groups dedicated to ensuring permanent protection of precious resources by purchasing land, accepting donations of land or acquiring conservation easements from landowners. In Wisconsin alone, land trusts have worked with landowners to protect nearly 70,000 acres of land and water resources.
Muskego Lakes Conservancy protects these three natural areas around the Muskego area:
Linnie Lac Marsh Wetlands are complex systems that support many varieties of plant and animal life. Low-lying areas like Linnie Lac March filter silt and nutrients washed from upland sites, enhancing water quality downstream.
Calhoun Creek This is an example of lowland woods, oak savannah and other streambank buffers that stabilize surface water flow and reduce flood peaks and flood damages to downstream lakes.
Mill Valley Jewel Creek drops rapidly through Mill Valley, cooling and adding oxygen to the water that comes over the Linnie Lac dam.
Muskego Lakes Conservancy supports programs to inform and educate the community about watershed conservation issues and options. Shoreline residents, watershed landowners, local policymakers, business owners, school children -- everyone who lives or vacations here looks to Muskego Lakes Conservancy as an environmental resource.
Schools, Scout troops, 4-H groups, college student interns and others interested in visiting Muskego Lakes Conservancy properties for learning outdoor skills and/or environmental education are invited to call 262 679 3480.
